INDONESIA SERIES: LITHOGRAPHS
1985-1987

About 1981 I had an exhibition of my prints at Alisan Fine Arts Gallery in Hong Kong. Jean and I went to attend the opening and decided to take a side trip to Indonesia and spent a week exploring Java and Bali. I became fascinated by the soft stone religious statues, especially on Hindu Bali. Many of these statues had been placed outside and were exposed to the elements. Over the decades and centuries the soft stone had been eroded by acid rain and other pollutants. Many of the details had disappeared leaving mysterious looking images. These images lent themselves perfectly to the reduction lithography technique I had been experimenting with for the previous six years. Several of these sculptures became the subject of my work over the next three years.
